Summer Jam 2019 Week 3! Until It Can't No More!

Today we remember our fallen veterans, but more importantly, open pools and grill hot dogs during a day off from work. Hooray! We have eight more tasty jams to unleash today in what we'll always remember as the soundtrack to swimming, eating hot dogs, and crying for our lost loved ones.

Hot Jam of the Week: "In the Dark" by YG

This is a hot track with an intense throbbing beat and cutting flo. I'm not sure it will gain real mainstream appeal, but it's picking up some steam on Hip-Hop stations. It's kind of insane, kind of fun, and slightly danceable. A perfect summer jam! Also, was that a Pikachu reference?

"GO!" by the Black Keys

I can't remember the last Black Keys song - and it shows! These folks are old! How did that happen? I will always respect a band who can stay out of the spotlight for a bit then come back and sound exactly the same. This is vintage Black Keys and a pretty solid, if not ultimately forgettable tune. Summer chart crawling possibilities are possible.

"The London" by Young Thug ft. J. Cole and Travis Scott

This is a collection of really zeitgeist-y rappers and they produced a great track. This is another jam that I'm personally digging right now but isn't really in the spotlight. This is how Summer Jams work, people. It's a cool jam. We'll see if it can get a music video in the next few weeks and push its prospects a little higher. Is that a thing, still?

"Break Up with your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" by Ariana

We haven't really chatted about this song enough. It's downright bizarre considering the year Ari had, but it's also a really bold and confident jam. There isn't much musically to talk about, but there's a fun rhythm here. It also makes me nervous for any dude Ariana is targeting. There are a lot of break up songs, but not many "break up with this person" songs. Robyn did it better, btw.

"Dancing with a Stranger" by Sam Smith & Normani

I don't know how we got a point where all our male pop artists are soft spoken falsetto crooners. I guess we've actually always been there. This song has been a solid background jam for quite a while now and seems content hanging out in this middle range. It could stay and rack up some numbers. We'll see where it trends.

"I Don't Care" by Ed Sheeran ft. Justin Bieber

This song is growing on me a little bit and could be poised for some good Summer Jam-ness. It had a strong Billboard debut and has a good presence on spotify right now. It's also pretty enjoyable, even if those snares are a little rough after listening a few times in a row. The only thing that doesn't ring true is Sheeran and Bieber not fitting in at parties.

"Bad Guy" by Billie Ellish

This was a monster song this week. It's fitting that the top two slots are by new no name artists here. This is hypnotic and seductive and has a lot of room to grow this summer. It doesn't really sound like anything else out there right now, which is special. I'm still not convinced that any new artist can actually find lasting staying power anymore, but we'll see how this tracks after this week's improved performance.

"Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus

There was no debate here. I was sort of doubting this track for a while, but it should have just taken up all eight spots this week. Might it flare out too much too fast? Possibly, but it just feels like the only Jam King candidate right now. Hell, it feels like the only song out right now. It's still really fun to listen to. It's just a blend of everything and comes out so weird yet so awesome. It's about time we had such a big song as this.

Next week...

I don't see "Old Town Road" vacating its spot, but there are plenty more cropping up. I'm still thinking about Lizzo, J. Cole, Khalid, and Tyler the Creator. All narrowly missed the cut this week and could find themselves back in the game. Stay tuned to find out who gets the spot!
